Learn to Chant Torah

Join Cantor Sarah for weekly Torah chanting classes.
You’ll be chanting Torah with joy before you know it!

Building Blocks
Beginner level six-week course

Mondays at 6:30pm
January 11, 25, February 1, 8, 22, March 1

Thursdays at 6:30pm
January 14, 29, February 4, 12, 26, March 4

The Building Blocks six-week course is perfect for beginners who have never studied Torah trope (cantillation), as well as those who might have learned some trope a long time ago and want to start afresh.
We’ll learn a method for turning those squiggly markings in and around the Hebrew text into easily identifiable music symbols, and we’ll work on chanting simple Torah verses from each week’s Torah parashah (portion).
By the end of this six-week course, participants will be able to prepare a short aliyah, and will be encouraged to participate in our spring Zoom* Shabbat morning services!
The same class will be taught on Monday and Thursday evenings each week, so come to either or both sessions. Click here to enter at 6:30pm.
Contact [email protected] if you’re interested or have more questions.

*With our Shabbat and Festival services on Zoom for the immediate future, we have a great opportunity for new Torah chanters to dip a toe in the water, as it were. Torah chanting now is easier than it ever has been at Kane Street Synagogue!

We used to chant Torah from a scroll without any vowels or trope,
Now we chant Torah from a printed text with vowels and trope.

We used to chant Torah using an Annual cycle with longer aliyot,
Now we chant Torah using a Triennial cycle with shorter aliyot.

We used to chant Torah in the sanctuary in front of over a hundred congregants,
Now we chant Torah from our homes in the online presence of a smaller minyan.
