Assistant Clergyperson

Kane Street Synagogue, a vibrant and growing Conservative synagogue in Brownstone Brooklyn, is seeking a warm, knowledgeable, and creative Cantor-Educator or musically-skilled Assistant Rabbi to fill an exciting new Assistant Clergy position.

Senior Rabbi Michelle Dardashti will supervise and mentor the person in this role, which has three main responsibilities:

  1. Prayer Leadership: Our Assistant Clergy will preside over all liturgical aspects of our shul, including leadership of services, training and coaching of lay davening leaders, and ensuring that services run smoothly. Through their musical ability, coupled with their skill and creativity at leading prayer, they will serve to enrich our services on Shabbat and haggim. This person must build a close working relationship with the members of the ritual committee, who will support this work.
  2. Oversight of B’nei Mitzvah Program and Adult Education: The Assistant Clergy will be responsible for our B’nei Mitzvah program, including assignment of dates, ensuring students are prepared, and being a warm and accessible point of contact for families throughout the process. (They will not tutor them 1:1 but will be in communication with tutors throughout students’ preparation.) The assistant clergy person will also oversee our adult education program, for which they will engage educators and ideally serve as a dynamic teacher themselves.
  3. Community Engagement: The clergy person will reach out to and deepen engagement with various community cohorts, including young families, young adults and couples, and the many active retirees who make up our Hazak group.

In addition to performing the roles described above, the clergy person  will share music and learning on visits to our Preschool and Hebrew School. They will participate in life cycle events and offer pastoral care for congregants.

The ideal candidate will have strong community building skills across all ages and types of observance. Musicality is essential, and proficiency on an instrument, preferably guitar, is a plus.

The salary range is $100,000-$110,000. The candidate is not required to live within walking distance of the Synagogue.

Please send a letter of inquiry, resume, and davening/singing samples to [email protected].
