In just one step to help our community engage issues of racial justice, we have been organizing book circles around Me and White Supremacy.
Acknowledging our own racist thoughts is not an easy task and so starting this journey with other synagogue members can be helpful. You don't have to expert in this, just willing.
Book Circles have four Zoom meetings over a month of reading and journaling. As for format, the book has an appendix about discussing this book in community, which may be a good place to start. We also have past Book Circle leaders who can talk about their experiences.
The intention of gathering is not social, or to critique the book like in a regular book club; it's to come together to discuss how racism shows up in our own lives, and ultimately work toward becoming more than an ally, but an accomplice in the fight towards equality.
Circles take one week to cover each 7-day section. Below is a sample August schedule.
- Sample August Schedule
- Thursday August 6, 8:00pm - Part I, Part II Week 1, and Appendix
- Thursday August 13 8:00pm - Part II Week 2
- Thursday August 20, 8:00pm - Part II Week 3
- Thursday August 27 8:00pm - Part II Week 4, and Continuing the Work
